The BECI 765 kV Transmission Line Project
The BECI Project is a proposed approximately 190-mile, 765-kilovolt transmission line across southern Wisconsin. The project would connect electric facilities in Crawford County with facilities in Walworth County before continuing toward the state line.
The proposal would introduce transmission infrastructure on a scale not currently seen in Wisconsin, with large towers, long spans between structures, and substantial portions of the route proposed through newly created corridors.
LWLCA is working to help residents and landowners understand the project, its proposed route, its stated purpose, and the potential impacts on property, farmland, natural resources, and local communities.
Project at a Glance
Approximate Miles
The proposed BECI transmission line would run across southern Wisconsin from Crawford County to Walworth County, then continue toward the state line.
Kilovolts
The project would operate at 765 kV, a transmission voltage significantly higher than the 345 kV lines currently used across much of Wisconsin.

What is Being Proposed
According to Midcontinent Grid Solutions (MGS), the BECI Project is an approximately 190-mile, 765-kilovolt transmission project in Wisconsin connecting electric facilities in Crawford County with facilities in Walworth County before continuing to the state line.
The transmission line would carry more than double the voltage of any existing transmission line in Wisconsin state history. Proposed towers could reach approximately 175 feet into the air and would be spaced roughly 1,200 feet apart.
A large portion of the proposed routes would cross “greenfield” corridors—areas where entirely new transmission corridors would need to be created rather than following existing corridors.

Who Are MGS and MISO?
Midcontinent Grid Solutions
Midcontinent Grid Solutions, or MGS, was selected to develop the BECI Project after successfully competing for the project in a process overseen by MISO.
Midcontinent Independent System Operator
MISO, the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, operates and plans the electric grid across much of the Midwest. MISO identified the BECI Project as part of its long-term transmission planning process.
Why LWLCA Is Concerned
LWLCA is concerned about the BECI Project’s potential impact on property owners, farmland, natural resources, rural communities, and the character of the areas the proposed line would cross.
Property Rights
Landowners along the proposed routes could face significant impacts on the use, value, and enjoyment of their property as new transmission corridors are created.
Natural Resources
Construction through greenfield areas may affect wetlands, waterways, wildlife habitat, wooded areas, and other important natural resources.
Farmland
New transmission infrastructure may affect working farms, agricultural operations, access, and the long-term use of productive farmland.
Communities and Viewsheds
Towers reaching about 175 feet could significantly alter rural landscapes, scenic views, and the character of affected communities.
Questions About Need, Routing, and Cost
LWLCA is also raising questions about whether the project is necessary, why so much of the proposed routing relies on new greenfield corridors, who will ultimately bear the cost, and how Wisconsin communities will benefit from the electricity the line carries.
LWLCA believes affected residents and landowners deserve clear information, meaningful participation, and full consideration of responsible alternatives before decisions are made that could permanently affect their land and communities.
Help Protect Our Communities
LWLCA depends on the support of landowners, residents, and neighbors who share our commitment to protecting Wisconsin’s land, communities, and property rights.
Your contribution helps support legal representation, education, outreach, research, and the work required to keep residents informed and engaged.
